Minecraft's Mounts of Mayhem Update Introduces a Beautifully Chaotic Fresh Weapon to Your World

The seasonal content update for Minecraft has touched down β€” and it includes the initial fresh armament added to the title since the heavy club made its debut. The spear is now available and it might just revolutionize your approach to Minecraft, especially if you love chaos.

An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides

The Mayhem Mounts update also introduces several new features and enhancements related to riding animals in the game. That focus made the spear the perfect fit for this update, as the creators had long felt it was time for a fresh combat tool.

"We knew initially that we aimed for a fresh armament that would add some more range, and we designed it specifically for fighting from atop a creature," noted a senior product manager. "We experimented with a number of concepts, but the spear was the one that both felt great when we ran our trials and also looked good for the intended purpose."

If you're asking yourself whether mounted combat means you can charge at your friends on steeds, the response is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an offensive action excellently designed for it.

"[Jousting on horses is a major applications for the spear, and it's incredibly enjoyable," the lead says. "The spear has a dual attack system: You have the quick stab, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a charge attack where you lower your spear and deal increased harm [with] the more speed and velocity you have. So [it’s] ideal for jousting on horses."

Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration

The chaotic fun can extend beyond there, though. If you're advanced sufficiently into the game that you've explored The End, the developers have an even more ridiculous idea. "If you are quite advanced, [spears are] excellent for equipping the elytra and taking to the skies and unleashing absolute pandemonium," she teases.

In other words: Sky jousting is now real, and it needs to become an competitive event without delay.

Another key feature in this latest drop is the underwater mount. This sea-dwelling mob, which is modeled after the seashells we've all been collecting for years, can be domesticated and mounted for submarine exploration. Not only will it move you through the water quicker than swimming, it'll also maintain your oxygen levels, so there's no requirement to surface for a breath.

The rest of the additions are primarily things that are out to get you, as is the nature of Minecraft. Naturally, there's also a rotting sea creature popping up in the water, often with a zombie villager on its back. If you are able to take care of the Drowned, though, you can befriend the undead mount β€” or the standard version, for that matter β€” with a puffer fish.

"We've been thinking about this challenge periodically, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it felt like the ideal opportunity to also bring in something for the ocean depths," the developer elaborates. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a number of concepts for aquatic rides that we wanted to test, but the Nautilus concept art looked impressive, and we have the link to the Nautilus shell that was pre-existing in the game."

She also adds that there are actually a pair of variants of undead nautilus: regular and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] add variety to what you discover underwater."

Desert Dangers and Long-Awaited Tweaks

Other additions include the sun-proof skeletons, biome-specific skeletons that can endure the sun, which means there's no refuge from them if you end up in that region. Sometimes you'll see them on camel husks, another fresh creature. Camel husks have an notable look that sees their skeletal frame exposed. The applies equally to undead steeds, who have a similar rib-popping design and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a spear-carrying undead rider on their back.

The final pair of items on the drop's list are minor quality-of-life improvements, including some much-anticipated adjustments to equestrian travel. Now, you can cross waterways while riding a horse. Also, netherite horse armor is now obtainable at the crafting table, so you can provide your steed with the top-tier safeguarding it deserves.

A Fittingly Chaotic Finale

Overall, the final game drop of the year is a notable addition. The spear by itself β€” and the potential for chaos β€” would have felt like a considerable upgrade. Add in the Nautilus, and new threats trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a little more dangerous.

The Mounts of Mayhem content drop is available for Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft.
